Tradition has it that he was born in Britain in the fifth century to Romanized parents, was captured by Irish Raiders at age 16, and spent six years in slavery in Ireland, before escaping and reuniting with his family in Britain. In a dream, he was called to bring Christianity to the Irish. So, he returned to Ireland and traveled far and wide, baptizing chiefs and kings, and converting whole clans to Christianity. He reportedly used the Shamrock, a three-leaf clover, to explain the Holy Trinity. The Shamrock is today the national flower of Ireland.
